Which Tokyo would you like to meet?
Tokyo Tower, TOKYO SKYTREE, and a skyline stretching into the distance. I'd love to look up at Kaminarimon's great lantern, and Shibuya has me curious, too. Perhaps a dish you've been wanting to try could be the reason for an outing. And after browsing for something from a favorite game or anime, a little cafe break sounds lovely.
Tokyo gives us plenty to be curious about. A lively shopping street today, a garden tomorrow: changing the pace can open up a different side of the same city.
Let's take a look around together. Perhaps somewhere in these neighborhoods, you'll find yourself thinking, “I'd love to go there.” I hope you do.
Asakusa and Ueno: temples, museums and shopping streets
That great red lantern makes a lovely place to begin in Asakusa. Beyond Kaminarimon, Nakamise leads toward Sensoji, with shopfronts to look at along the way.
If something catches your eye, give yourself a moment to stop. Getting to the temple can be part of the pleasure, too. And if you feel like a longer stroll, head toward the Sumida River for some time by the water.
For a visit to Ueno Park, the National Museum of Western Art catches my interest with its collection of well-known paintings and sculptures. There's also Ueno Zoo, Japan's first zoo. And in spring, those cherry-blossom-lined paths are really something.
Would you like to spend time with the artwork, or go and meet the animals? Choose one thing to look forward to first. You could add a browse around Ameyoko if you're in the mood for shopping, with time to linger somewhere you like.

Shibuya, Harajuku and Shinjuku: follow your curiosity
Beyond Shibuya's scramble crossing, places such as SHIBUYA109 and Shibuya PARCO have helped give the neighborhood its reputation for fashion and culture.
Shibuya PARCO opened in 1973 and has developed spaces for theater, music and art alongside shopping. That overlap is part of the background to Shibuya's reputation as a place where trends take shape.
Knowing a little of that story might make the shops and signs more interesting to look at. If an outfit or an exhibition catches your eye, let's leave room for a small detour.
Around Takeshita Street in Harajuku, distinctive fashions and expressions of kawaii culture give you plenty to notice. Nearby Omotesando offers another shopping atmosphere. You might find something you'd love to wear, or simply enjoy seeing a style you hadn't imagined before.
Shinjuku changes as you move between the skyscrapers west of the station and the shopping streets and a slightly edgier nightlife scene to the east. Once you've picked somewhere to go, check the station exit before setting off. Shinjuku Station is huge, with so many exits. It's easy to get a little lost if you're not paying attention!
All three are tempting. I'd leave time to linger in a shop you like, rather than making the whole day a race between them.

Marunouchi and Ginza: a little time to look around
At Tokyo Station, come outside on the Marunouchi side to see the red-brick station building. Looking between its facade and the taller buildings nearby is a pleasant way to start noticing the city's shapes and materials.
In Ginza, use Wako's clock tower as a landmark for a walk among shops such as Ginza Mitsukoshi. The buildings and window displays might give you plenty of occasions to say, “Oh, that's lovely.”
If you're curious about art, Shiseido Gallery is another place to consider. Established in 1919, it adds a long history of sharing art to Ginza's shopping story. Does knowing that make you a little more curious about what's behind the gallery door?
Shall we leave room for a cafe break? An afternoon with time to walk, sit down and look around sounds rather lovely to me.

Akihabara: find something you love
Have a favorite game, manga or anime? Akihabara may already be on your mind. Shops offer character goods, figures and model kits, alongside the electronic components and specialist equipment that are part of its identity as an electronics district.
One small wish is enough to get started: a shop you'd like to browse, a character you want to find, or some equipment you're curious about. You can give that interest a little time and see where it leads.
The large signs introduce the neighborhood. If something draws you into an individual shop, take a closer look. I'd love to know what catches your eye.

Gardens and everyday streets: let's slow down a little
After plenty of walking, an unhurried stretch of the day can feel especially inviting.
Shinjuku Gyoen offers lawns, a formal garden and a Japanese garden. Which kind of view would you like to spend time with? When you find one you like, you can give it a little longer.
A shopping street, a bookshop or a cafe can also become the focus of a walk. Sometimes a place that wasn't high on the original list turns out to be just your sort of thing. I'd like to leave a little room for that possibility.

What shall we eat in Tokyo?
Planning a walk does tend to bring the next meal to mind, doesn't it?
Sushi and soba have long associations with Tokyo, and local dishes such as monjayaki and Fukagawa-meshi offer more to explore. And there's TOKYO BANANA, too. How about choosing something you haven't tried before?
You might want a quick bowl of noodles, or time to enjoy a meal at a more leisurely pace. Then there's something sweet with tea to think about. Oh, choosing could take a little while.
Let's find a meal to look forward to in the neighborhood you want to explore.

There's more Tokyo beyond the city streets
We've been looking around the city, but Tokyo still has other landscapes to share.
To the west, Okutama has mountains, valleys and rivers. The Izu and Ogasawara islands bring island landscapes and cultures into the picture, too. It's rather exciting to think that a crossing, a mountain and an island journey can all belong to the same Tokyo.
If the mountains or islands are what catch your imagination, give them a trip of their own, with time for the journey as well as the stay. We can let that curiosity open up another plan.

Where would you like to begin?
Has a neighborhood caught your eye yet?
You could spend a day with temples and museums, browse for clothes, explore Akihabara's shops, or take your time in a garden and a cafe. There are plenty of ways to make the day yours.
Start with the thing you're looking forward to most. Add a meal and somewhere nearby you'd like to see, with time to enjoy them.
So, where shall we begin? Choosing together is part of the fun.
